INTEGRITY IN ACTION
Summer Tree and Plant Healthcare Services
What to do in the summer to keep trees and lawns healthy?
Yard trees get tested in Denver’s hot, arid summers. Summer tree care is about managing tree insects, proactive pruning, and hydrating root systems. Homeowners who regularly water and fertilize their trees should be OK. Pruning takes out unruly growth, opening trees to light and air for better health. If not treated in the spring, many of the tree pests identified in the Ross Tree Insect Calendar can become infestations in the summer and need immediate treatment. It is much better to be proactive with pruning and taking care of insects before tree problems occur. The Ross Tree General Manager discusses summer tree care issues that his arborists and tree crews found this year. Each summer presents distinct challenges, influenced by factors such as rainfall and insect activity. Watch the videos below to learn more.
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
The biggest news in 2025 was the detection of the EAV in Denver in June 2025. It took 13 years for it to travel from Boulder to Denver. These borers will kill untreated Ash, so the time to act to save Ash yard trees is now. Property owners, click here to learn more about this destructive insect.
Tree Watering Maintenance Programs
Watering regularly solves many issues trees face growing in Denver’s arid climate. Healthy trees can control insects using their natural defenses, so the impact of every insect, besides the Emerald Ash Borer, listed on our insect control webpage can be lessened by watering trees regularly. Ross Tree has the equipment to water the largest trees found in Denver. Click here to learn more about Ross Tree’s Tri-Level Tree Fertilization Program.
Tree Cankers
Fungi cause tree cankers, and some are tree-specific. The organisms can enter when trees become stressed and their natural defense mechanisms become compromised. Thyronectria cankers attack Honeylocusts, and Cytospora infects Aspens in Denver. Nectria canker affects maples, beech, elm, honeylocust, birch, apple, and oak. Once established, tree cankers are hard to treat if treatable at all. The best defense against canker is proactively pruning and watering throughout the year to maintain plant vigor. Denver got hit hard with two cankers in 2022. Click here to get more details.
Denver’s Clay Soils
Denver’s heavy clay soils cause many issues. Some trees grow poorly in our clay soils and should not be planted. Heavy clay soils decrease the ability of the root systems to absorb oxygen and water. Also, these soils cause iron chlorosis in Maples. Ross Tree’s Tri-Level Tree Fertilization Program aerates soils and improves soil quality.
