Ross Tree is known for tackling the most complex tree service challenges in Denver and the surrounding metro area. We have expertise in heavy equipment, intricate cabling strategies, and navigating the permitting process for large-scale tree removal and pruning jobs. We want to shine a light on an equally crucial service: proactive tree pruning. Pruning is a vital measure that can significantly improve the health and longevity of yard trees in the following ways.

Early Hazard Detection: While certified arborists provide valuable assessments from the ground, they usually do not climb trees. Our tree climbers, during regular pruning, literally get inside the canopy of trees. This unique perspective allows them to identify insect infestation or disease damage that are invisible from the ground. A prime example is the Emerald Ash Borer, which attacks the top of the tree and works its way down to the trunk. Our climbers can spot tell-tale signs like thinning leaves or D-shaped holes in the upper canopy, enabling early intervention.

Disease Prevention and Management: Pruning is critical for preventing the spread of diseases within a tree. Removing dead or diseased branches can stop infections entering the interior tissues of trees. For example, Thyronectria Cankers usually start in the branch tips and can enter the tree’s vascular system through open wounds. Removing any diseased branches can prevent the fungus from making their entry. Similarly, Fireblight, a bacterial infection, must be prevented from reaching the trunk of the tree by removing infected branches. Once the disease reaches the trunk, the tree will be severely compromised.

Structural Health: Proper pruning early in a tree’s life is critical for providing good structure by developing a dominant leader. Yards trees get a lot of light and can become straggly. Pruning to a dominant leader improves light penetration and photosynthesis. Better air circulation dries the leaves in the crown preventing fungal issues.

Species-Specific Pruning Needs: Maple trees grow fast and their branches tend to be brittle so this species needs a lot of pruning. Large maples need tree trimming to prevent limbs falling on houses, potentially damaging cars, and hurting people. Elms also grow fast and need periodic pruning to maintain proper structure. Pine tree trimming is straight forward, while Spruce are tougher because of branch density. We often uplift the skirt on Spruces, when they are next to houses or close to sidewalks. Cottonwoods, Russian Olives, and Elm trees are “wet trees” meaning they have a very high water content. When the bark is punctured, the sap gushes out. Elms infected by bacteria or fungi, will spray out like a faucet when cut or punctured. Our team understands these unique characteristics and knows to wait before proceeding with systemic injections.

Proactive pruning helps property owners protect their tree assets from Denver’s arid climate and unpredictable weather. For an appointment call 303-871-9121 or click here to fill out a request service form
